Conversations don't have to be complicated. Some tips to get you going:
1. ASK OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS
These questions begin with “How, who, what and why” and provide the bedrock for a conversation to occur. Creativity, higher level thinking, imagination, and relationship building can’t come from yes & no questions.
2. BE READY FOR A FOLLOW UP QUESTION.
Open ended questions can be tricky — you never know where the conversation will go, so you have to be ready with follow up questions like “why do you think…”, "what would happen if…”, “how would that feel…”
3. REINFORCE THE THINKING — NOT THE RESPONSE.
“I like how you thought about that” is better than “great answer.” Don't encourage a robotic response - encourage their creativity and honesty. Their answers are invitations to get to know them better.
